Branch of biology which study algae is called as phycology. Phycology is derived from Latin world Phyco (Latin) means – seaweeds.
What is Algae?
Algae is chlorophyllous, unicellular colonial & simple multicellular, oxygenic photosynthetic group, aquatic (fresh water & marine) & semiaquatic in habitat, unicellular non-jacketed sex organs, and lack embryo in his developmental history.
Why algae included in thallophyte?
- Zygote does not develop into embryo.
- Reproductive organs (spores producing/gametes producing) are not enveloped
Why algae included in cryptogams?
- Reproduce by spores not seed
- Reproductive structures are inconspicuous or hidden.
- Cryptogams are thallophytes, bryophytes, pteridophytes.
